Evie returned before my pudding arrived. Sliding into her chair, she eyed my dessert and said, “That looks good. I’ll have some too. One of the best things about being fae is that I can eat anything.”

“Molly will be happy to hear it.” I looked over my shoulder. “Jeff is around here somewhere. What did you find out?”

“Oh. It’s child’s play. No problema. But I need a couple of rarish herbs to put in a pouch under your pillow. I’m guessing Esme either has them or could get them.”

“That’s. . .” Keir appeared to be looking for words. “A relief.”

“It is,” I agreed, then turned to Diarmuid. “Diarmuid. Why do you think Loki is messing with me?”

He lifted one large shoulder in a who-cares shrug. “Whoever knows what the bugger is thinkin’? My guess is that you’re the hour’s shiny ball.”

I blinked. “Shiny ball?”

Evie laughed. “I told Diarmuid that’s what humans call it when someone is easily distracted.”

“I’m the shiny ball in this scenario. I get it. The question is why? I mean I’m not that shiny.” With a raised eyebrow, I added, “Or ball-shaped? Right?”

Evie chuckled. “You’re fishing for compliments. Yes, you’re shiny. No, you’re not ball shaped. Gods work in mysterious ways as they say.”

“I’ve heard that.”

I may’ve been the only person alive to know when my daughter was holding back. Something about the way her eyes shifted away a little too quickly, or the way she stared a millisecond too long at her dinner.

“What aren’t you saying?” I asked. Out of the corner of my eye, I could tell that Keir’s interest had jumped to life and refocused on Evie.

“Well…” she said.

I gave her ample time to finish, but I don’t like to give people too much time to make up stories that shade the truth.

“Well, what?”

“Well, the sleep-protection spell…”

“Evie! The sleep-protection spell what???”

“Serafina says there’s usually no question about its effectiveness, but first, you’re mostly human and, second, Loki and the ales monstrum are quite unusual.”

“So will it work, or won’t it?” Keir sounded impatient.

“It should,” Evie said. “But Serafina says guarantees are impossible because of the nature of Mom’s nocturnal visitors. She told me to ask the Bureau.

“I did.

“They said, ‘Sure. We can issue an injunction. But who’s gonna enforce it? Loki is a wild card. Does what he wants. He’s the fly in everybody’s ointment.’

“And the ales monstrum. . .? Well, they have no idea how to find it. You may be the only one in our dimensions of purview who’s ever seen or talked to it.”

“Him,” I corrected then immediately wondered why I was being defensive about Jersey Devil pronouns.

“Whatever.” Evie dismissed the distinction, which wasn’t like her. She was usually pedantic about language.

“You learned all that during the five minutes you were gone?” I asked.

Evie gave me an indulgent smile. “Time, uh, moves differently in the magic world.”

“Hmm-hmm. No doubt,” I said.

Keir jumped in. “So the Bureau didn’t have any suggestions.”

“I didn’t say that.” Evie shook her head. “They said, and I
